What This Site Is

The Sauna & Plunge exists to answer the questions people actually have about heat and cold therapy — without the hype, the unsupported claims, or the thinly veiled product pitches that dominate most wellness content.

We cover three main areas: cold plunge therapy, home saunas, and finding gym saunas. Within those areas, we try to give you the most accurate, useful information available based on published research and real-world experience.

Why We Built This

If you've searched for information about cold plunging or home saunas, you've probably encountered the same problem: most content is either superficial ("Top 5 benefits of cold plunging!") or obviously written to sell you something. Legitimate physiological claims are mixed with anecdote. Research citations, when they appear, often link to abstracts that say something different from what the article claims.

We built The Sauna & Plunge to be the site we wanted to read. That means going deeper than the surface-level summaries, being honest when evidence is mixed or preliminary, and being useful for practical decisions — not just interesting to skim.

What We Cover

Our content falls into four main categories:

  • Cold plunge therapy: Benefits grounded in published research, temperature and frequency guidance, equipment reviews from stock tanks to premium chiller units, and DIY build guides. See the cold plunge guide for an overview.
  • Home saunas: Types, costs, installation requirements, and honest product assessments for infrared, traditional, and barrel saunas. See the home sauna guide.
  • Gym saunas: Which gym chains actually have saunas, how their amenities compare by tier, and how to find one near you. See the gym sauna guide and our guides on specific chains — LA Fitness, YMCA, Planet Fitness, and more.
  • Contrast therapy: The combination of sauna and cold plunge, the science behind alternating heat and cold, and how to build a home contrast therapy setup. See the contrast therapy guide.

Our Approach to Research

When we say something produces a specific physiological effect, we try to trace that back to actual peer-reviewed research — not to a podcast episode or a supplement brand's website. We cite studies from journals like the European Journal of Applied Physiology, British Journal of Sports Medicine, and PubMed-indexed literature, and we flag where evidence is strong versus where it's preliminary or contested.

We also try to be honest about what we don't know. Cold therapy research is a rapidly evolving field — findings from 2018 are sometimes refined or contradicted by more recent studies. We aim to keep content current and to acknowledge uncertainty where it exists rather than projecting false confidence to seem authoritative. The cold water immersion research we reference throughout this site is drawn from peer-reviewed sports medicine literature, including studies published in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed database.

Who This Site Is For

The Sauna & Plunge is written for people who are seriously considering adding heat or cold therapy to their routine — not for readers who just want validation for something they've already decided to do. We try to write for someone who wants to make an informed decision, not someone who wants to feel good about a purchase they made last week.

That means we'll tell you when a $4,000 cold plunge tub isn't meaningfully better than a $300 chest freezer conversion for your use case. It means we'll say clearly that Planet Fitness doesn't have saunas, rather than soft-pedaling it. And it means we won't pad articles with generic wellness advice just to hit a word count.

If you're a researcher, athlete, or just a curious person who's read that cold plunging or sauna bathing might be beneficial — this site is built for you. We try to give you exactly the level of specificity you'd want from a knowledgeable friend who happens to have done the research.
